SEMINARS

Freedom from Attachment, 22 July 2017, 2.30-5.30pm

Attachment begins with the word ‘mine’. Attachment is essentially what makes us take life too seriously simply because we make ourselves slaves to the objects of our attachments. In such moments we don’t have possessions, it’s as if our possessions have us. True freedom from attachment means to be free from everything around us including matter, material things, memories, ambitions etc. But it’s only possible when we see and realise that our attachments are not ‘in reality’ out there! Our attachments are created within our own consciousness. It’s not the actual objects or persons that we attempt to attach to.

Me and My Senses- Who is the Master? 29 July 2017, 2.30-5.30pm

Senses are our lines of contact with the outside world and through them combined or individually we base our thoughts and feelings. So should we just depend on them for our judgment, behavior, reactions? Or should we install a filter and a control screen to avoid misconceptions, deceits, and disappointments? How can we regain control and become drivers not passengers?

Inner Power for Meeting Challenges – 6th August 2017, 7-8.30pm

It is ironic but true that in the midst of plenty there is still endless strife and peacelessness and many of us feel more uncertainty in our lives than usual. Unfortunately, the strategies most of us rely on when we can’t predict the future are self-defeating. These include worry, complaint, and pessimism. Now is not the time to despair. Now is the time to develop that inner strength and inner power that will definitely help us to face the challenges in life.

PAST EVENTS

The Power of Acceptance – 15 July 2017, Arif Dawood and Zaheer Nasser

Are you always trying to change things that seem to be out of control? Do fights in your personal relationships affect your day-today functioning? Stop for a moment and try to accept things as they are. Expectations are usually the projections of the silent desires that our mind holds which makes our relationships feel burdensome. The energy of acceptance is healing and allows us to see things as they really are rather than as imagined by the mind. Acceptance is the natural innate nature of the self and when exercised it allows us to align ourselves to the truth. Acceptance is a power which is liberating.

However we can use mindfulness to shed light on the inner self and illuminate those area’s where we can sometimes let ourselves down.

Non Violent Communication & Meditation – 29 April 2017, Karin Garaialde and Sona Bahri

Developing daily awareness to create compassion towards yourself and others, we will share 2 tools to choose a nonviolent response to life: NVC and meditation. The goal of NVC is to create a dialogue that respects all the needs, it’s a communication process based on genuine expression and empathy. Created and developed by Marshall Rosenberg, NVC today flourishes in 60 countries. NVC helps us connect with each other and ourselves, in a way that allows our natural compassion to flourish. It guides us to reframe the way we express ourselves and listen to others by focusing our consciousness on four areas: what we are observing, feeling, and needing and what we are requesting to enrich our lives. NVC helps you to more easily resolve conflicts, get what you want without demands, hear the needs of others, strengthen your personal and professional relationship and live your fullest potential. Meditation is a way of life. Meditation means having awareness of all your thoughts. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. It describes a state of consciousness where the mind is free of all the mixed thoughts, and is able to concentrate on just one thought and feeling. Meditation gently guides us towards pure and non-violent thoughts that originate from the real self.

Arabic Workshop, 8 April, Maryam al Blooshi and Nael al Fakih

Don’t be fooled… by your own mind’s deceit, illusion or delusion – 1 April 2017, Arif Dawood

In our current world, the awareness of human beings is very limited. As long as they’re attached to appearances, they’re unaware that their mind is empty. And by mistakenly clinging to the appearance of things, they lose the way.

Is seeing really believing? When we use our two eyes we are often deceived. Together with the physical eyes we have to learn how to use our third eye, the eye of the intellect. In this workshop we shall explore how to activate and use this special sight. What changes can we expect to occur in our lives when the intellect becomes clean and clear?

Restoring Balance in Life, 18 February 2017, Naji Sayegh and Sona Bahri

Most of us find life a constant juggle in which we try to fulfill many different responsibilities. Firstly, to our family and friends—most of us do feel relationships to be the highest priority; secondly, our responsibilities in our chosen career; thirdly, to our other interests, whether they be community service, sport or just our own recreation. Neglecting any one area can create stress. The greatest stress does not come from overwork, but from the worry that we are neglecting an area of our life. So how do we find our point of balance in each situation? In this workshop we are going to explore:

  • What is balance
  • What causes imbalance in life
  • How to restore balance in life
  • What a balanced life feels like

True Self-Respect – Saturday 1 October, Muazzam Abdul Rehman and Sona Bahri

Do you live an uncompromised life? An uncompromised life is one in which every aspect i.e. career, relationships, health, money & purpose are all thriving in equal measure? Most people either want everything but don’t believe they can get it all OR have it all but struggle to hold onto it. So what’s really stopping us from living a life to the fullest? Many of us are unconsciously holding on to specific self-respecting blocks that prevent us from living an uncompromised life. These may include:

  • fear of rejection and failure
  • insecurities
  • not being good enough
  • feeling a lack of purpose and meaning
  • doubts about myself and others.

This workshop is designed as an opportunity for you to reflect and unblock areas that are in the path of living an uncompromised life. The result is a life full of peace and joy!

Change, Change & More Change – how to find stability in times of change – 13 September 2016, Mahima Amin

“Change is inevitable” is a phrase we have all heard. We live in a world where there is constant change which in turn challenges us on a daily basis. We live our lives at a speed that is just too fast trying to catch up with all the changes going on. The world looks increasingly chaotic when mass shootings, heart breaking refugee crises and senseless acts of war is all we hear and see in the media. Challenges hit even closer to home, like dealing with a difficult boss, struggling with a health issue or discovering your relationship is on the rocks!

It isn’t always easy to maintain calm, peaceful and joyful when constant change is around you – or is it? This is a workshop to come and discover your inner constant being to guide you to that peaceful, calm and serene place whilst you are on a long conveyor belt of constant change.

The Power of the Present Moment – 3 September 2016, Hiromi Willingham and Sona Bahri

“You can only do what you want when you know what you are doing.” Moshe Feldenkrais

Mindfulness is a state of consciousness where you observe what is arising in you or around you in the present moment without judgment or criticism. You simply notice. You notice what is happening, such as, your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, or even memories that may arise. As a neutral observer, you notice different parts of yourself that normally interplay outside of your ordinary consciousness. You begin to know yourself in a far deeper way than ever before. You then begin to understand why you do what you do. With the practice of meditation, one can easily bring the mind to the present moment and focus it on whatever one wants for however one wants. The first thing to focus on is ME! Meditation is the art of healing myself by being in the present moment.

Choose to be Calm Anytime, Anywhere – 6 September 2016, Sheilu Chawla

We often miss the gift of life because we live at a speed that is just too fast. So many of us believe that if we are not busy, then we are not effective; and as we get caught in the maelstrom of our busy-ness, we experience emotional and spiritual pain. The truth is that it’s possible to meet the demands of our lives with a spirit of peace and calm. It’s possible to be anchored in the storm. We could take the image of the eye of a hurricane. A hurricane is a powerful force of nature: damaging winds, torrential rains, destructive waves. Yet, there is complete tranquility in the middle of this destructive storm. That’s where we are meant to live, in the centre of our inner self.

Exploring and Living Your Values – 20 August 2016, Arif Dawood

Forget, Forgive, Feel Free – 13 August 2016, Sona Bahri

In a world where behavioural patterns are often far from being based on values; I may find myselves unable to understand and accept situations and people. This may lead to confusion, hurt and misunderstandings. When I understand we are all actors in this great drama of life, I can accept each actor’s part and I realize everything is for a reason. This is a workshop to clarify the steps to experience release from past hurts and feelings of animosity towards the self and others. Using meditation commentaries to guide and realize, this workshop allows me to recognize bitter feelings, aches of blame and wounds of resentment and how to gently heal them by coming back to the awareness of my original goodness, and by developing the capacity to accept, forgive, forget, learn… and finally be free.

Restoring Balance in Life – 30 July 2016, Arif Dawood

Most of us find life a constant juggle in which we try to fulfil many different responsibilities. Firstly, to our family and friends—most of us do feel relationships to be the highest priority. Secondly, our responsibilities in our chosen career. Thirdly, to our other interests, whether they be community service, sport or just our own recreation. Neglecting one can create stress.  The greatest stress does not come from overwork, but from the worry that we are neglecting an area of our life. So how do we find our point of balance in each situation? In this workshop we explored:

  • What is balance
  • What causes imbalance in life.
  • How to restore balance in life.
  • What a balanced life feels like

Creating Change through Inner Silence – 17 June 2016, Ms Jayanti Kripalani

Rather than waiting for outward changes in my life to make me happy, how do I change my attitude and approach – from ego to humility – in tasks and relationships? Silence is understood by many as a state in which there is an absence of any physical sound. From a spiritual perspective there is far more to it than that. If I can stop for a few moments and become quiet – dis-engage from my physical senses and move away from the need to think or feel, I will find myself moving towards stillness. There is a natural detachment from all that is around me, the people, the things and my  stories. In silence I begin to experience the connection of the self, with eternity and ultimately my connection with the Divine.

Freedom From Anger – 18 June 2016, Arif Dawood

Anger is an expression of not accepting an incident or situation triggered by a feeling of pain within the self. It is one of the most destructive emotions. It comes in a whole range of spectrum from simple irritation to exploding in full rage, causing damage to ourselves and to others. How can we tap this energy and use it in more positive way? This workshop will cover:
-Understanding different types of anger;
-The underlying causes of anger;
-The effects of anger on our well being;
-Using our energy in the most efficient way.

The 8 R’s of Meditation – 23 July 2016, Sona Bahri

What is meditation? Meditation is the discovery of that point of silence within, like a compass needle that guides us in the right direction at the right time. To become silent, to be still in the ocean of hectic, noisy action, is a choice many people are now making. When this is achieved, this stillness acts on the mind like oxygen, giving the breath to both understand and enrich life. Of course action is a necessity, however, if we do not sometimes stop and take a breath of silence, then

  • the mind begins to suffocate
  • thoughts speed like bullet trains
  • the brain feels as if it is in a pressure cooker
  • emotions erupt and react like volcanoes

The Power of the Present Moment – Saturday June 11 2016, 2.30-4.30pm

The Art and Science of Mindful Change – 20 February, Arif Dawood and Tomader Ali

In recent years there has been a phenomenal rise in our awareness of mindfulness and meditation. These ancient treasures have come forth in our modern world and have relit paths long forgotten. It is not uncommon to hear the phrase ‘the return to the self’ in practices such as mindfulness and meditation for they provide tools to guide us to achieve this very positive change we want. On the other hand, in this modern world, we are also surrounded with much biological and neurological science that supports the very psychology of change and supports the fact that we can change at any age and in various circumstances. The effect of mindfulness and shift of awareness is now well backed up by scientific research. So let’s explore together how we can use mindfulness, meditation and science to learn the skills of mindful change. Let’s learn practical ways of implementing these practices at home, at work and starting with our own selves…today!

Non Violent Communication & Meditation – 16 January 2016, Karin Garaialde and  Sona Bahri

It’s about TIME – 6 January 2016; 7-8.30pm

We give so much importance to time. We feel guilty if we waste it, we complain that we don t have enough of it, try to save it and are afraid of running out of it. We often think of abundance as applying to wealth and facilities but what would it feel like to have an endless supply of time? What does a healthy relationship with time actually look like, and how can we create and maintain that healthy relationship ourselves?

The Power of NOW – 9 January 2016, Stephane Olivier

Everything goes too quickly in life! Everything is too full, too loaded, there are too many options, too many choices to make in a short amount of time and I can barely step back and breathe. If you have had such thoughts or if you still have them, then it is about time you offer yourself the possibility to step into the dimension of  ‘NOW’. Dare to explore it and you might find that in the NOW lies the only way to survive the rollercoaster of the year 2016.

Freedom From Attachment – 19 December 2015, Sona Bahri

Attachment begins with the word ‘mine’. Attachment is essentially what makes us take life too seriously simply because we make ourselves slaves to the objects of our attachments. In such moments we don’t have possessions, it’s as if our possessions have us.  True freedom from attachment means to be free from everything around us including matter, material things, memories, ambitions etc. This is only possible when we see and realise that our attachments are not ‘in reality’ out there! Our attachments are created within our own consciousness. Liberation from attachment happens when we not only stop attempting to possess but realise it’s impossible to possess!

NOW’ – 31st October 2015, Daniel Haworth

This 3 letter word has a lot of power and appears in many different contexts. We live in a global culture where we want everything NOW, and it is somewhat ironic that having this kind of demanding attitude doesn’t allow us to live “in the NOW”. But what does? This talk/workshop looks at what it means and feels like to be completely present – to experience heightened self awareness. Are there any habits that prevent us from staying in this natural state? And are there any methods we can identify that not only help us experience this type of awareness, but that will help us carry it with us during the day?

Overcoming Addictions – 24 October 2015, Sona Bahri and Mariam Dawood

For those in the grip of an addiction – be that over-eating, excessive internet shopping, getting angry, upset, depressed – it seems as though they can never break free. Then it happens: a sudden amazing insight, a life-changing conversation, a sudden coincidence, divine intervention, a chance meeting… and the world can swivel on its axis and set the addict free. But if and when the moment of clarity arrives, would you be ready to grasp it, and are you prepared for the consequences of change? Bring along two small but essential qualities – readiness and willingness, and be prepared for a potentially life-changing afternoon. Join us in:
• Understanding the mechanism of addictions
• Getting practical advice on switching old addictive habits
• Learning spiritual tools to help you break free and find peace
• Discovering the power of the pen to write a new chapter for yourself
• Sharing your own story and learning from the experience of others.

Communication from the Soul – 17 October 2015, Ramon Ribalta

In this workshop we will look the topic of communication from a deeper perspective, trying to connect and express the qualities of the inner self, the soul. We will focus more on the spiritual level of communication and realize how that can influence our mental and emotional levels.
If we apply this style of ‘communication from the soul’ in our lives, if we fully give from our soul in our communication with others, then the result will be an improvement in the quality of our relationships.

Mindfulness & Meditation in Action – 10 October 2015, Hiromi Willingham and Ramon Ribalta

Meditation comes from the word ‘mederi’ meaning to heal; so from the space of a detached observer, one starts to heal parts of the inner self that have been hurt or damaged. Research indicates that mindfulness and meditation have many far-reaching benefits, such as regulating your emotions, and letting go of tension and stress, bringing more creativity and increasing your effectiveness at life. Finding an Oasis of Peace within Diversity – 9 September, Join Niall Fenix

This is a conversation that looks at where diversity has lead us to in this world. In a globalised world of great diversity, perhaps one of our many challenges is to find our own wellspring of peace and harmony within the differences that surround us. Differences and diversity can inspire us, or pull us into many different directions. We can find ourselves moving away from the source of that which unifies us. Meditation is one tool that helps us recover our core value of peace & harmony, enabling us to live together with diversity, and respect our differences.

Choose Calm In the Midst of the Storms – 15 August, Ramon Ribalta

Exploring the 8 R’s of Meditation – 4 July, Sona Bahri and Mariam Dawood

What is meditation? Meditation is the discovery of that point of silence within, like a compass needle that guides us in the right direction at the right time. To become silent, to be still in the ocean of hectic, noisy action, is a choice many people are now making. When this is achieved, this stillness acts on the mind like oxygen, giving the breath to both understand and enrich life. Of course action is a necessity, however, if we do not sometimes stop and take a breath of silence, then:

  • the mind begins to suffocate
  • thoughts speed like bullet trains
  • the brain feels as if it is in a pressure cooker
  • emotions erupt and react like volcanoes

Come and find that point of silence within which will recharge your mind with peace, clarity and balance.

In this workshop we are going to explore:
– What is balance
– What causes imbalance in life.
– How to restore balance in life.
– What a balanced life feels like

The Power of the Mind (23rd October 2014) – Bert Wenker

Come and discover the power of your mind. We are run around in this physical world to create a happy life but to what extent are we using our capacity of our mind in this? A busy mind often means a confused mind. Many scientists say that the human brain is only being used to 10 per cent of it’s functioning capacity. Is this true? What if we used it to full capacity?

Feeling Confident: Feeling good about you and learning to change your life for the better (15 October 2014) – Kanti Khanna

Is it possible to feel good in today’s world of crisis and disorder? How can we recover our ability to feel really good- not as a temporary fix or indulgence but as a long lasting state of being? Enthusiasm, optimism and contentment are among the keys that can free us from chains of bondage. We learn that these qualities spring from faith in the goodness of the self and life. Love enables us to feel good. Love is in all of us, but needs to be tended with spirituality. If we demand love from the world around us, we destroy our ability to receive love.

It’s Time……or is it? (20 September 2014) – Arun Nijhawan

How often does one make new year resolutions but then fail to keep up with them after a few weeks? What influences us to impose such challenges to ourselves in the first place? Usually, it is our own inherent desire to be a better human being. Unfortunately, we are more or less stuck in our old pattern of habits, thinking and behaviour which makes change difficult.. In addition, we are passing through a critical time in this world, where the negative influences are all around us. Ever wondered what could be done to initiate a change  in our own life? This depends on how  we  answer this simple question: It’s Time……or is it?

Balancing A Healthy Body and Healthy Mind (7 June 2014) – Sybil Nijhawan and Mahima Amin

Is a “Healthy Mind” a “Healthy Body”? Being healthy mentally can often translate to being healthy physically. Scientific research has shown us that the human brain has a dramatic effect on our internal organs and body functions. In fact, a positive mental attitude can make your immune system more effective. Your body will be able to recover at a quicker pace, along with being able to fight off things that otherwise would not have been able to. To create a healthy balanced life our mind, body, heart and soul should be in harmony. Meditation is a tool that connects us with our core values, nature and each other, which facilitates reaching a higher understanding of our purpose and true-selves. Remember positive thoughts are the key for good health which is your wealth!

Freedom from Negativity (31 May 2014) – Mohit Sibal

Freedom from Anger (17 May 2014) – Arif Dawood

Freedom from Desires (10 May 2014) – Muazzam Abdul Rehman and Sona Bahri

The sorry state of the world, and the ever-increasing corruption and erosion of values can be put down in large part to desires.  The division between the ‘Haves and Have Nots’ is increasing. In truth no-one wins because everyone is suffering. Perhaps it’s time to live more simply and more authentically. A desire is a shadow that keeps us running after it, a mirage that tempts us appearing to be real.  Inner emptiness drives us to chase after external desires. Our craving for physical objects is a sign of discontent within the soul.  We try to fill the void by accumulating ever more. And even after getting ‘it’, there is still the desire for more and more, which implies, ‘it’ was never enough and never will be!  In fact greed is a bottomless pit that never ever gets filled. Greed and desire create a pattern of reliance on material objects and co-dependant relationships…which often bring us limited and very temporary happiness. To be free from desires requires a process of replenishing the inner being with love and joy, quite independent of what I have on the outside. Come to an enlightening workshop to identify your cravings and desires and gently bid them farewell.

Freedom from Attachment (3 May 2014) – Sona Bahri and Elaine Pretorius

Attachment begins with the word ‘mine’. Attachment is essentially what makes us take life too seriously simply because we make ourselves slaves to the objects of our attachments. In such moments we don’t have possessions, it’s as if our possessions have us.  True freedom from attachment means to be free from everything around us including matter, material things, memories, ambitions etc. But it’s only possible when we see and realise that our attachments are not ‘in reality’ out there! Our attachments are created within our own consciousness. It’s not the actual objects or persons that we attempt to attach to. The inner state of freedom from attachment gives rise to the feeling of bliss that is already there but it’s been suppressed and buried. Liberation from attachment happens when we not only stop attempting to possess but realise its impossible to possess!

It’s OK! – Saturday (19 April 2014) – Gosia Bekker

Right or wrong, good or bad? Our daily lives are constantly influenced by judgments. Based on these judgments we live our lives…so what does our monkey have to do with this? Looking at things from a different perspective not only makes living easier but opens new possibilities in life.

Why ME Why HERE Why NOW?’ Rediscovering the purpose and meaning of your life – (17 December 2012) – Mike George

    • For some people the question ‘why’ seems to hang permanently in the background of their life. It shows up as a voice in their head that often says, “Why am I doing this…What am I doing here?” They are always searching for answers to ‘something’, as if it’s built into their nature. Others are occasionally brought to an abrupt halt in their life by an event or a crisis that invokes a deep ‘why on earth did that just happen’ moment. The search in both cases is for a sense of identity and meaning, context and connection. The answers are of course always within us but we don’t know why we cannot hear them or see them! If we didn’t already know the answers we could not create the questions!
  • What am I missing and why? Is it time to call off the search?
  • What’s the point and why? Is there really a reason to be here?
  • Where to next and why? Is the future so important it has to consume our life NOW?
